Door Into the Dark has found its family. For now we have subsituted our editor for a set designer and our composer for an architect. And a talented pair at that. Felicity Hicks was assitant art designer on Skyfall and is working with us in her downtime till the next Bond. Tabitha Pope launched Recycles Venues in 2005, has made giant sculptures from junk around the country and is in the middle of planning how to spend Bob Thingy’s money in a giant field in Glastonbury.
Welcome to stories you move through.
In this version of things Pinocchio is the same old wooden toy crafted at the loveable red nosed carpenter’s table and his visitation from the fairy is full of sparkle and tingly sound effects. But when his wish is granted he doesn’t just pop out into his Lederhosen, he pops out of the screen, wanders past the popcorn laden public, politely squeezed past the usher and spends his Disney money in the arcade at the end of the Odeon. And you all gather round and watch.
There’s something about this idea, getting three-dimensional with your narrative, that appeals to a lot of people whose work we respect. In a way Blast Theory, Punchdrunk, Circumstance, Coney are all trying to get a shave closer to the real – be it in very different ways. But at the same time they each have their ways to keep it all at arms length so we can enjoy the fantasy.
The fact is a very nice comfortable 90 minutes in red velvet chairs is a hard thing to leave. And you dont want your whingeing limbs get in the way of a good story. But that aside what can spaces do for us?
The Royal Academy has a show called Sensing Spaces on at the moment. Its their annual show stopper where architects have subverted and contorted the all too recognisable space of the Royal Academy to get us to think about feeling in the context of the spaces we move through.
Feel first I reckon.Think later,
And something made you feel. The elegant scented bamboo construction by Kengo Kuma made calm, your skin a little more alive.
The coloured straws on offer to build extensions protuding from Pezo von Ellrichshausen’s white perspex skeleton made you agitated – the task of adding and taking away like a challenge to arms
The wooden maze by Li Xiaodong navigated from above a white lit floor was disorientating yet serene.
But it was the Grafton Architect’s piece and their high ceilings in light and dark that made you want to speak in hushed tones in a corner and look up at the light like it was a deity. A light weight cathedral full of drama and austerity.
